MCP charters a Filesystems Working Group, merged into the official docs on September 8, 2026

The charter file's own history dates its content earlier: the commit that converted the proposal into a charter, "docs: convert filesystems WG proposal into a charter," landed August 24, 2026, and the file's Changelog table carries a single row, "2026-08-24 | Initial charter." The page is live on the official docs site, which returned HTTP 200 when checked.

The charter's mission statement reads: "The Filesystems Working Group exists to make MCP Resources bidirectional, so that an agent can write a result back to the server it reads its inputs from." Its scope is one Extensions Track SEP, provisionally titled "Filesystem Operations for Resources," covering create, update, delete, and a metadata read (stat) that answers existence, size and last-modified without fetching a resource's body; optimistic concurrency control for avoiding a lost update; and the interaction between a write and notifications/resources/updated, the ttlMs and cacheScope cache fields, and the lastModified annotation. The SEP is meant to reconcile two open proposals, SEP-2571 (which proposes resources/create and resources/delete) and SEP-2532 (which proposes resources/stream). Out of scope: a parallel files/* primitive standing beside Resources.

The charter names three WG Leads: Sambhav Kothari and Daniel Temesgen of Bloomberg, and Ola Hungerford of Nordstrom. Two commits landed September 3, 2026, after the initial charter: "docs: add Daniel Temesgen as filesystems WG lead" and "docs: update filesystems WG membership," which added Temesgen to the leadership table.
