MCP publishes an Agents Working Group charter naming Tasks stabilization as its primary deliverable
The MCP project published a charter for an Agents Working Group whose stated mission is making interactions with agent-backed systems interoperable over MCP. Its central deliverable is stabilizing the io.modelcontextprotocol/tasks extension and promoting it into the core protocol. The group is led by maintainers from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft.
The MCP project published a charter for an Agents Working Group, merged into the specification repository on 2026-08-05 and carrying an initial charter date of 2026-08-04. Its stated mission is making interactions with agent-backed systems interoperable over MCP.
The central deliverable is Tasks. The charter puts stabilization of the
io.modelcontextprotocol/tasks extension and its promotion into the core
protocol in scope, which matters because the 2026-07-28
revision moved Tasks out of experimental core and into
that extension under SEP-2663. The charter also covers an Agents
Extension evaluation spanning agent-as-tool, remote-agent and
supervisor with sub-agent patterns, prototypes, SDK and conformance
coordination, and documentation. A two-level agent definition proof of
concept is listed as an active work item, and the Agents Extension
evaluation has no champion assigned yet.
The out-of-scope list is drawn tightly against the other working groups: general-purpose agent frameworks and runtimes are excluded, transport wire formats and session mechanics belong to the Transports Working Group, and general event delivery and callback mechanisms belong to the Triggers and Events Working Group.
The group is led by Luca Chang of Amazon Web Services and Caitie
McCaffrey of Microsoft, both on initial terms, and the membership table
lists only those two. Operations are a weekly 30-minute working session,
an #agents-wg Discord channel, and the agents-wg and ext-tasks
repositories in the modelcontextprotocol organization.
