MCP 2025-11-25 ships URL elicitation, CIMD, and experimental tasks
The protocol's fourth revision, released on MCP's first anniversary, added OpenID Connect discovery, URL mode elicitation, tool calling in sampling, Client ID Metadata Documents as a recommended registration mechanism, experimental tasks for durable requests, and formalized governance with working groups and SDK tiering.
Released exactly one year after MCP itself, the 2025-11-25 revision was the last stateful revision of the protocol. Its focus was authorization ergonomics and richer interactions: authorization server discovery via OpenID Connect Discovery 1.0, incremental scope consent, Client ID Metadata Documents as a recommended registration mechanism, URL mode elicitation, tool calling inside sampling, and icons metadata across tools, resources, and prompts.
It also introduced experimental tasks for tracking durable requests with polling, the feature that later graduated into the official tasks extension of the 2026-07-28 revision, and formalized project governance: working groups, interest groups, and an SDK tiering system with explicit maintenance commitments.
