Agent Plugins 1.0 reaches general availability in VS Code, Copilot CLI, and the Copilot app

GitHub made Agent Plugins 1.0 generally available on 2026-08-12 in VS Code, Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot SDK, and the GitHub Copilot app, across all Copilot plans. The changelog entry describes the format's MCP surface directly: "A plugin can bundle a skill with an MCP server, such as a deployment runbook and its tool integration," with the MCP configuration stored in mcp.json files inside the plugin.

GitHub's entry names the 1.0.0 specification an open standard co-developed with AWS, Anysphere, Microsoft, OpenAI, Vercel, and Google, and links the spec text, a plugin author guide at agent-plugins.org, and an example plugin with a migration guide. The rollout puts the vendor-neutral format, announced on 2026-08-06 as "an open, vendor-neutral standard for packaging Agent Skills and MCP servers into portable plugins," in the hands of Copilot's installed base six days after its debut.

One loose end sits in the specification repository itself: as of 2026-08-14, agentplugins/agent-plugins-spec has no releases and no git tags. The 1.0.0 spec text that GitHub links lives on the main branch, so the version that four Copilot surfaces now implement exists only as a document, not as a tagged, immutable release.
