GitHub Copilot CLI is GitHub's coding agent for the terminal, and MCP is its extension surface: servers give Copilot access to data sources and tools, with the GitHub MCP server as the documented built-in example. Since 2026-08-12 the CLI also installs Agent Plugins, which bundle MCP server configurations in their own mcp.json files.
